Startup Naming Ideas: Four Frameworks That Actually Produce Good Names
Stop staring at a blank Notion doc. Four naming frameworks used by founders and brand strategists, with examples and pitfalls.
Naming a company from scratch is brutal. Most founders cycle through 200 candidates before finding one that's available, defensible, and ownable. Four frameworks shorten the path.
1. Compound brand
Take a brand modifier (High, Vertex, Omni, Nexus) and pair it with a category root (Sovereign, Privacy, Neural, Axon). Output: HighSovereign, OmniAxon, NexusNeu. Strong, distinctive, defensible.
2. Place + category
Geographic anchor + technical root. JapanNeural, DubaiNeural, SaudiOmni. Especially powerful for ventures targeting sovereign markets.
3. Abstract coinage
Invent a word with clean phonetics — two syllables, hard consonants. Stripe, Notion, Linear. Maximum trademark strength, maximum branding lift required.
4. Latin / Greek roots
Vault, Axon, Sigma, Vertex. Familiar enough to feel grounded, distinctive enough to own.
The final test
Say it on a phone call. If you have to spell it, kill it.
